The Art of Embodiment - Movement, Mindfulness, & Creative Flow

DATE: Sunday, 10/5

TIME: 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

FACILITATOR: Ashley Sonson

Join us for a gentle, trauma-sensitive yoga practice followed by mindful creative expression in this embodiment workshop. The first half hour will guide you through invitational movement and breathing, with an emphasis on listening to your own body. The second half invites you into a meditative art-making experience, encouraging creative expression in a non-judgmental space. Some examples of past creative expressive practices have included intuitive collage, nature mandalas, and touch drawings.

No prior yoga or art experience necessary!—just an open mind and willingness to explore your creative flow. This workshop is open to all people regardless of age, gender identity, race, ethnicity, body type, and physical ability.*

Everything is optional: feel free to engage in the movement, art, or both—your choice, your pace. We emphasize self-compassion and non-attachment to the outcome, letting creativity unfold naturally. This is a space for self-connection, nonjudgmental exploration, and the growth of agency.

The movement practice is based on TCTSY trauma-sensitive yoga, focused on internal awareness, breath, and movement rather than external performance. We believe that you are the expert of your own body. All activities are designed with your preferences in mind, and there are no physical hands-on adjustments. Chairs, cushions, and limited mats are available. You’re welcome to bring your own mat if desired.

The facilitator will reach out to new participants for a brief conversation to answer any questions about the movement portion of the workshop. All art supplies are provided.

Please register by 10/3. If you have missed the deadline, please contact us to see if space is available.

*PLEASE NOTE:This is not a substitute for therapy, so please reach out to a therapist or medical provider if you are experiencing ongoing mental health or medical challenges. You must register to obtain the access code to the studio as we are in a secure building. Our studio space is only accessible by way of stairs with a railing.

RANDOM ACTS OF ORIGAMI

RANDOM ACTS OF ORIGAMI

DATE: Monday, 10/6

TIME: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

FACILITATOR: Lawrence Souder

Remember the first time you made a paper airplane or a fortune teller? How marvelous it was to fold a piece of paper into a 3-D object! But paper folding is not just for kids, and it’s not just for play. In 1958, Kosho Uchiyama, a Japanese Zen priest, published a children’s book on paper folding entitled Origami Zukan, in which he wrote: “I sometimes fold paper to soothe my depressed mind or to relieve my loneliness.”

In 2025, contemporary scientific research confirms the Zen teacher’s experience. Researchers in Brazil found that after eight 60-minute sessions of making origami models of increasing difficulty, people with dementia showed improvements in visuospatial memory, attention skills, intelligence, and executive functions. Researchers in India found that origami therapy is an effective, simple, and engaging non-pharmacological intervention for reducing anxiety in hospitalized children.

In this workshop, you can relive the childhood joy of origami, and you can also explore the healing possibilities of this meditative art-making practice. No previous experience (child or adult) is required. We begin with a moment of quiet meditation and move into a creative, non-judgmental space. You will learn some basic folds like the peace crane and proceed to more intricate pieces like the lotus flower.

Please register by 10/4. If you have missed the deadline, please contact us to see if space is available.

PLEASE NOTE: You must register to obtain the access code to the studio as we are in a secure building. Our studio space is only accessible by way of stairs with a railing.

Join us for a unique and transformational creative expression practice that fosters intuition, explores choice, and combines creative narrative writing with the option of including images in a way that matches your personal style. Say it with words (and only words) through exclusive standard journaling and/or with added images in a visual art journal or larger collaged work of art. Exercise the freedom to experiment with all these options, perhaps to go outside your comfort zone to the growth edges!

This playshop offers a gentle, invitational approach to self-expression, allowing you to process and embrace all aspects of life, from the down right hard challenges to the deliriously happy stuff, and all that’s in between! Techniques and various styles will be demonstrated along with new weekly prompts to ignite your inner flame and use as a guiding light if you so choose. No matter what, this is your journey, and there’s no ‘wrong’ way to express yourself.

Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch or snacks if you want to “picnic” while you create, ponder, or wait for paint and glue to dry.

The cost of this class includes basic supplies. A variety of high-quality journals for mixed media will also be available at an additional cost payable to the facilitator. You are welcome to bring your own as well. Please send us an email via CONTACT if you have any questions. Don’t let finances keep you from coming; instead, contact us about scholarship availability.

Please register by 10/12. If you have missed the deadline, please contact us to see if space is available.

PLEASE NOTE: You must register to obtain the access code to the studio as we are in a secure building. Our studio space is only accessible by way of stairs with a railing.

EMBODIED EARTH- Monthly Walk & Nature Art Studio

DATE: Wednesday, 10/15

TIME: 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

FACILITATOR: Ashley Sonson

Step onto the tranquil arboretum grounds of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, and let the landscape guide you inward.  Each month at Blooming Peace, we blend a mindful outdoor walk with a hands‑on nature-based expressive art practice, turning the sights, sounds, and sensations of nature into a personal creative practice.

Who? - Anyone seeking a deeper connection to body, mind, and the natural world is welcome. The space is inclusive and rooted in the belief that nature’s rhythms can help us attune to our own.

Cultivate:

  • Embodied Awareness – Notice breath, sensations, emotions, in a supportive, mindful setting.

  • Mind‑Body Flow – Channel the experience of your outdoor exploration directly into a piece of expressive art.

  • Creative Renewal – Using natural materials sparks fresh ideas and playful experimentation

  • Community & Belonging – Shared walks and studio time foster genuine connections

  • Increased Well‑Being – Research shows that mindful exposure to green-space combined with artistic expression can reduce stress and lift mood.

How the session flows

  1. Centering Moment –brief guided meditation that grounds you in the body and opens the senses.

  2. Exploratory Nature Walk – Wander the arboretum in community with others, sharing thoughts or simply soaking in the beauty of the scenery. Solo moments are encouraged for quiet reflection and gathering natural inspiration (leaves, twigs, stones, feathers, etc.).

  3. Studio Creation – Back in Blooming Peace’s bright studio, you’ll transform any collected elements and/or studio supplies into the month’s themed expressive‑arts project. All materials, tools, and guidance are provided.

  4. Closing Circle – Share insights, reflect, and celebrate each other’s work.

Changing Monthly Theme – Each session introduces a new nature‑based project that reflects the season’s energy.

Rain or Shine – Inclement weather shifts the event indoors while preserving the spirit of the walk. Comfortable, sturdy shoes, water, and layered clothing are recommended.

October Theme – “Seasonal Looms”

This month we’ll weave nature looms using found branches, grasses, bark, feathers, and any personal objects you’ve gathered (in addition to studio supplies).  The loom is a living metaphor for what you’d like to invite into this season—growth, gratitude, renewal, or any intention that calls to you.

Please register by 10/13. If you have missed the deadline, please contact us to see if space is available.

*PLEASE NOTE: Our studio space is only accessible by way of stairs with a railing.

The Creative Oasis offers a chance for you to pause, connect, and restore in community with others who “get” the unique challenges of your work. Past sessions have explored mixed media collaging, watercolor painting, flower pressing, alcohol inks, and much more. All materials are provided, and you're welcome to join us whenever your schedule allows.

Occasionally, we'll offer special feature classes (noted in the title description for that week) to introduce new techniques that can deepen your creative experience.

No artistic experience necessaryCome as you are.

Our intention is to co-create a safe space where you can simply create, explore, and unwind.

You can choose to follow our gentle prompts and guidance, or use the time as an open studio to work on your own creative projects. Whether you're looking to try something new or tap into a passion, this is a judgment-free zone where you can't do it "wrong."

Feel free to approach this time as 'preventative maintenance' for your soul or as an opportunity to connect with kindred professionals. However you choose to view your experience, we offer a gentle reminder: caring for yourself is just as vital as caring for others.

If you're ready to nurture your creative soul, The Creative Oasis awaits you. We can’t wait to welcome you!

The Art of Embodiment - Movement, Mindfulness, & Creative Flow

DATE: Sunday, 10/19

Please register by 10/17. If you have missed the deadline, please contact us to see if space is available.

*PLEASE NOTE:This is not a substitute for therapy, so please reach out to a therapist or medical provider if you are experiencing ongoing mental health or medical challenges.

A SHEKERE MAKING WORKSHOP: GOURDS & BEADS

DATE: Friday, 9/26

TIME: 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

FACILITATOR: Tami Nosal

Unleash your inner rhythm and connect with the vibrant traditions of West African music in this hands-on shekere-making workshop! The shekere, a captivating percussion instrument crafted from a gourd and adorned with a beaded net, is a staple in many cultures in Africa and South America. In this workshop, you'll learn the essential steps to create your very own playable shekere, ready to bring unique textures and sounds to your musical explorations.

Although she doesn’t consider herself the most accomplished artist or musician, Tami has a deep passion for rhythm. For years, she made the weekly trek to NYC to study with the inspiring African percussionist Madeleine Yayodele Nelson. This transformative experience now fuels her desire to share the shekere and what she learned from Madeleine with others who may benefit from its creation and unique sounds.

What you'll learn and do:

  • Gourd Preparation: Discover how to select, clean, and prepare gourds for shekere construction, ensuring proper resonance and durability.

  • Netting Techniques: Master the fundamental knotting and weaving techniques required to create a sturdy and aesthetically pleasing net that holds the beads securely.

  • Bead Selection & Application: Explore various types of beads, shells, or other resonant materials suitable for shekeres, and learn how to attach them effectively to the net for optimal sound.

  • Finishing Touches: Understand how to properly tension the net and add any final embellishments to personalize your instrument.

  • Cultural Context: Gain an appreciation for the history, cultural significance, and diverse uses of the shekere in various musical traditions.

Who is this course for?

This workshop is perfect for anyone interested in:

  • Percussion and world music

  • Traditional crafts and DIY projects

  • Learning a new skill in a fun and creative environment

  • Adding a unique, handmade instrument to their collection

No prior musical or crafting experience is necessary – just a willingness to learn and create! All materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring any personal beads, buttons, or other items you might like to use to embellish your shekere.

Please register by 9/24. If you missed the deadline, contact us to see if we can squeeze you in.

The Creative Oasis offers a chance for you to pause, connect, and restore in community with others who “get” the unique challenges of your work. All materials are provided, and you're welcome to join us whenever your schedule allows.

Occasionally, we'll offer special feature classes (noted in the title description for that week) to introduce new techniques that can deepen your creative experience.

No artistic experience necessaryCome as you are.

Feel free to approach this time as 'preventative maintenance' for your soul or as an opportunity to connect with kindred professionals. However you choose to view your experience, we offer a gentle reminder: caring for yourself is just as vital as caring for others.

Please register by 9/19.

You care for others - this space is here to nurture YOU.

Welcome to The Creative Oasis, a weekly gathering for those who give care to others and share the heart of service: therapists, social workers, healthcare providers, clergy, teachers, veterans, caregivers—anyone in the helping or healing professions (whether you're currently serving or retired).

The Creative Oasis offers a chance for you to pause, connect, and restore in community with others who “get” the unique challenges of your work. Each week, we offer a different creative theme or project, and you’ll be able to experiment with a variety of art materials.

Please register by 9/17. If you have missed the deadline, please contact us to see if space is available.

Body Image with Marla

DATE: Thursday, September 18

TIME: 5:30 PM -  7:00 PM

FACILITATOR: Marla Greenberg

ACTIVITY: Body Image Discussion and Creative Expression

This class will be held twice monthly on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00.

Everyone’s relationship with their body is unique. Our feelings about our bodies are often layered, shifting, and hard to put into words. This circle is for anyone who’s wrestling with thoughts about appearance—whether you’ve had weight‑loss surgery, are navigating an eating‑disorder journey, or simply notice the way you see yourself in the mirror.

How it works

  • Participants are invited to share at their own pace, with a gentle invitation to speak when they feel ready.

  • Only one voice speaks at a time, and we hold space without judgment or advice—just listening and caring.

As a person with body-image issues, I know and understand the feelings and struggles of having no place to go with it. This group will create a place for people to listen, talk, share, and find out they are not alone. The intention for this group is that people will be able to make genuine connections and feel the comfort of a supportive community.

Creative Expression

If you’d like, you can draw or paint anything that reflects how you feel about your body—abstract shapes, realistic sketches, or anything in between. Making or sharing your artwork is completely optional; you decide what feels right. Afterward, we’ll have a brief moment for anyone who wants to talk about their creative process and what it brought up for them.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a substitute for therapy, so please reach out to a therapist or medical provider if you are experiencing ongoing mental and/or physical health challenges. You must register to obtain the access code to the studio as we are in a secure building. Our studio space is only accessible by way of stairs with a railing.

Please register by 9/16. If you have missed the deadline, please contact us to see if space is available.
