Unearth hidden stories and unleash your creativity, exploring old texts through a new lens in this immersive, multi-session workshop series. We will be guided through the process of taking a discarded hardcover book and transforming it into a one-of-a-kind, mixed-media masterpiece. Part collage, part book art, this series explores how to manipulate existing pages to create a personal journal, a visual memoir, or a sculptural art object.

Series Overview:

  • Session I: Every Act of Creation Begins with Destruction. Pablo Picasso

Learn how to plan the spacing of your altered book, tear pages, glue pages, and prepare your book with structural integrity.

  • Session II: An inspiring pop-up book with gorgeous 3D images… The encouraging test reminds readers to strive, to dream, and to believe that all things are possible. —Goodreads review of ‘Believe’ by Robert Sabuda

Construct architecture and special features in your book. Choose pop-ups you’d like to include in your book.

  • Session III: A secret home is like rocks under tide. —Proverb from Psychology Today

Create secret and sacred spaces in your book, through the creation of a drawer or other covert techniques.

  • Session IV: A book cover is a distillation. It is a haiku of the story. —Chip Kidd

Add a decorative cover to your book, with fabric or decorative papers.

  • Session V: Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. —Leonard Cohen

Found poetry and intuitive painting are exciting ways to use the former content of your altered book.

  • Session VI: I don’t create for the result, but for the feelings I feel during the process. —Unknown

Learn tips and tricks in the work of collage.

  • Session VII: Art enables you to not only forget yourself but rediscover yourself in the process. —Anonymous

    Altered bookmaking work session.

  • Session VIII: Stories make us more alive, more human, more courageous, more loving. —Madeleine L’Engle

Celebrating as we share our stories.
