10/6 – RANDOM ACTS OF ORIGAMI: Folding Your Way to Peace
DATE: Monday, 10/6
TIME: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
FACILITATOR: Lawrence Souder
Remember the first time you made a paper airplane or a fortune teller? How marvelous it was to fold a piece of paper into a 3-D object! But paper folding is not just for kids, and it’s not just for play. In 1958, Kosho Uchiyama, a Japanese Zen priest, published a children’s book on paper folding entitled Origami Zukan, in which he wrote: “I sometimes fold paper to soothe my depressed mind or to relieve my loneliness.”
In 2025, contemporary scientific research confirms the Zen teacher’s experience. Researchers in Brazil found that after eight 60-minute sessions of making origami models of increasing difficulty, people with dementia showed improvements in visuospatial memory, attention skills, intelligence, and executive functions. Researchers in India found that origami therapy is an effective, simple, and engaging non-pharmacological intervention for reducing anxiety in hospitalized children.
In this workshop, you can relive the childhood joy of origami, and you can also explore the healing possibilities of this meditative art-making practice. No previous experience (child or adult) is required. We begin with a moment of quiet meditation and move into a creative, non-judgmental space. You will learn some basic folds like the peace crane and proceed to more intricate pieces like the lotus flower.
Please register by 10/4. If you have missed the deadline, please contact us to see if space is available.
PLEASE NOTE: You must register to obtain the access code to the studio as we are in a secure building. Our studio space is only accessible by way of stairs with a railing.
