Welcome to the wonderful world of the shekere! This versatile percussion instrument, originating from West Africa, is made from a dried gourd covered with a net of beads. It produces a unique rattling and shaking sound that can add incredible texture and rhythm to any musical setting.
In this lesson, we'll cover the fundamentals to get you started including: holding the shekere, basic sounds, and a few introductory rhythms.
What you'll need:
A shekere!
Although she doesn’t consider herself the most accomplished artist or musician, Tami has a deep passion for rhythm. For years, she made the weekly trek to NYC to study with the inspiring African percussionist Madeleine Yayodele Nelson. This transformative experience now fuels her desire to share the shekere and what she learned from Madeleine with others who may benefit from its creation and unique sounds.

No prior musical experience is necessary - just a willingness to learn!
